Abstract(s)
efetuava a investigação arqueológica no nosso País, explicam igualmente as razões
Here we present the annotated correspondence between Leite de Vasconcelos and Joaquim Fontes preserved in the Archives of the National Museum of Archeology (the letters send by Joaquim Fontes to José Leite de Vasconcelos) and of the National Laboratory of Energy and Geology (the letters send by José Leite de Vasconcelos to Joaquim Fontes). The main correspondence was exchanged between 1910 and 1925, throughout the period of the 1st Republic. It illustrates clearly the nature, haracteristics and problems of the archeological investigations carried out in Portugal and for which José Leite de Vasconcelos played the importante role of prime protagonist. The fragilities shown on the correspondence in the way archeological research was conducted in the country explain why Joaquim Fontes, the 1st disciple of Leite de Vasconcelos, abandoned the archeological career and devoted himself to other universitary activities.
