Em carta a Sebastião de Matos e Sousa, Vieira compara o que ele chama “discursos vulgares que até agora se imprimiram” (os Sermões) a “choupanas”, e o livro em que trabalha (a Clavis Prophetarum) a “palácios altíssimos”. Entendemos que as metáforas têm um sentido sobretudo temporal: com o termo “choupanas” referir-se-ia à obra de circunstância; com a expressão “palácios altíssimos”, à obra de grande fôlego, que lhe exigiu investigação, leituras e sucessivas reelaborações. Numa e noutra, uma teologia retórico-humanista: “positiva”, alicerçada em fontes e nos acontecimentos históricos; e prática, focada fundamentalmente nas questões éticas e políticas, e não na especulação escolástica. Uma teologia aberta à novidade e ao horizonte da esperança na consumação do Reino de Cristo. Um teólogo para além do seu próprio tempo, precursor de outros tempos...
In a letter to Sebastião de Matos e Sousa, Vieira compares what he calls “vulgar speeches that have so far been printed” (the Sermons) to “hovels”, and the book in which he works (the Clavis Prophetarum) to “towering palaces”. We understand that metaphors have mainly a temporal meaning: with the term “hovels”, he would refer to the work of circumstance; with the expression “towering palaces”, to the work of great breath, which required research, reading and successive reworking. In both, a rhetorical-humanist theology: a “positive” one, grounded in sources and historical events; and a practical one, primarily focused on ethical and political issues rather than scholastic speculation. A theology that is open to novelty and to the horizon of hope, in the consummation of the Kingdom of Christ. A theologian beyond his own time, and precursor of other times...
