Abstract(s)
The media discourse is an element of great importance in image formation of the Other and, therefore, the media assume a decisive role in intercultural relations. The image of Portugal and the Portuguese society spread in the news about the financial crisis 2011 is negative. The Portuguese are exclusively associated with a set of attributes not appreciated in the European scale of values, such as poverty, disorganization, corruption or laziness. The media discourse within the Portuguese crisis is also dominated by the prominence of foreign institutions and personalities linked to European structures of power. In the same time there is almost total absence of common Portuguese citizens in the media. Portugal is also presented together with other countries facing financial crisis, mainly Greece and Spain. Common terminology is being used to describe the group of countries facing the crisis. This terminology is often pejorative. The media discourse takes often a function of moralization, trying to identify those who are responsible for the crisis and presenting austerity as a "penalty" that will lead to rehabilitation of the country. In this dynamic there is a clear demarcation of 'we' in relation to the Other in which the Other is presented in double stereotype - for being different and for being poor.
