Abstract(s)
Mozart's and Da Ponte's Don Giovanni is widely considered the opera of operas and a milestone regarding the creation of the mythical hero who, even when death is imminent, has the coherence and courage to remain faithful to his principles and way of life, refusing the forgiveness offered him. Musicologists believe that the music inspired by Shadwell's play, namely from Purcell, Gluck and Pocok, paved the way for Don Giovanni. What has hitherto been ignored is the impact of Shadwell's play The Libertine on this opera and on the future directions that Don Juanism would take. This article examines this issue.
