Abstract(s)
aprendizagem do século XXI.
A number of innovative approaches for teaching and learning have been proposed in the last decades thanks to the development of new technologies. New concepts, such as mobile learning (m-learning), have emerged and are turning the learning experience mobile. This study aims at contributing to m-learning within the domain of language education and, in particular, to verify how m-learning can enhance the foreign language teaching and learning processes, with a focus on the development of communication skills (above all written skills) in the learning/teaching of Portuguese as a foreign language (FL) in Higher Education. The study focus on the analysis and use of the follwoing mobile applications: Kahoot!, Padlet and Socrative. With regard to the methodology, we followed a case study. Data were collected through a survey and participant observation, and then it was subject to quantitative (statistical analysis) and qualitative (content analysis) methods. The results of the study allow us to conclude about the positive impact of mobile devices combined with the use of the three applications, Kahoot!, Padlet, Socrative, as far as the level of involvement of the students in didactic activities are concerned. It is also possible to verify that the adoption of those apps has enhanced the development of the students’ written production, which is especially true with the apps Padlet and Socrative. Concerning Kahoot!, the study confirmed that this application promotes a competitive environment and is thus more likely to spark gamification scenarios. In short, we consider that these applications, combined with adequate m-learning strategies, promote the enhancement of learning skills in 21st century. It should also be noted that such an approach is fit for the societal changes that are taking place nowadays, introducing pedagogical challenges and new learning strategies for Portuguese as a FL. We expect to further test and implement this kind of strategies in language learning/teaching, namely in higher education.
