Abstract(s)
Linguística Textual, Interacionismo Sociodiscursivo, Análise do Discurso, Estudos
Retóricos do Gênero, Inglês para Fins Acadêmicos e Gênero e Multimodalidade. No
Social media are a rich and dynamic environment for textual genres usage. The goal of this study is to identify and characterize the main textual genres on important social media in Brazil: Facebook and Twitter. In order to reach that goal, 1,696 texts, produced by four active Brazilian users of both social media during May 2016, were analyzed. The adopted theoretical framework and methodology include contributions from Textual Linguistics, Sociodiscursive Interactionism, Discourse Analysis, Rhetorical Genre Studies, English for Academic Purposes, and Genre and Multimodality. In this study, 32 genres were identified and characterized. The hybrid genre and the open chat genre are the most popular on both Facebook and Twitter, which may reveal the users’ communicative purposes and also the intertextuality that is inherent in social networks. In addition, many occurrences of specific genres – such as tag, icon, and hashtag – were identified. Also, the study shows the adaptation of the other genres to the digital environment. This research demonstrates the powerful influence of the structure of social media on the generation, adaptation, and usage of genres.
