O fascínio pelo antigo Egipto e a utilização, adaptação e recriação das suas temáticas – o que se designa por Egiptomania – assegurou, a par da Egiptologia, a perenidade e proximidade da cultura desta civilização. Uma das áreas onde a presença do Egipto é identificável é a Literatura. Esta civilização, com tudo o que a caracteriza – a arte, a religião, a escrita, a simbologia, as impactantes figuras históricas, etc. – apresenta-se aos escritores como um cenário ideal para ser explorado e (re)contado das formas mais diversas, o que, obviamente assegurou também a contínua disseminação do saber sobre ela. O nosso texto visa explorar, no âmbito dos estudos da Recepção do antigo Egipto, um romance histórico, publicado pela primeira vez em 1906, em Paris, e que a realidade contemporânea – a descoberta do túmulo do faraó Tutankhamon – conduziu não só a uma nova edição, em 1923, como fez com que tivesse chegado a Portugal em folhetim e depois em livro em 1924. Trata-se de Le Péplôs vert. Moeurs égyptiennes (depois La Reine Taïa – Roman des temps pharaoniques) da autoria de Maurice de Waleffe.
The fascination for ancient Egypt and the utilisation, adaptation, and reproduction of its themes — what is call Egyptomania — assured, at the same time as Egyptology, the continuity and proximity of the culture of this civilization. One of the areas in which Egypt’s presence is identifiable is in Literature. This civilisation, with all its components — art, religion, writing, symbology, impressive historical figures, etc. —, presents itself to the writers as an ideal scenario to be explored and (re)told in the most diverse ways, what has also, obviously, assured the continuous dissemination of knowledge about it. Our text aims to explore, from an analysis perspective in the field of Reception of ancient Egypt studies, an historical novel first published in 1906, in Paris. The contemporaneous reality — the discovery of pharaoh Tutankhamun’s tomb — led to not only a new edition, in 1923, but also made possible for this novel to reach Portugal, first serialized and then as a book.
