Smart waste management: a look on Portugal towards the SDG

In a world in constant change and development, waste management has been seen as an important area and, therefore, a target for investment and environmental concern. Considering smart waste management methods, the goal of this work is to portray some relevant Municipal Portuguese smart waste implementation methods and describe several initiatives using intelligent methods seeking smart city development and towards the sustainable development goals 11.6.1, Municipal Solid Waste Management. Data collection was based on the literary review, using different types of information. The results show the state of the art in the implementation of municipal policies in this area, and the practical difficulties of the process, namely in terms of the necessary resources. Additionally, it was possible to understand the importance of the new methods to encourage a more correct waste management methodology seeking a smart city development and operational measures to reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of waste.
Empowering non-academic staff for the implementation of sustainability in higher education institutions

Sustainability within higher education institutions (HEIs) is a well-established topic in the literature. Many fields of education for sustainable development have been explored, mainly focused on HEI students, as well as on academic staff. The technical, administrative, and management staff, referred to as non-academic staff has not received as much attention as the remaining HEI community, which leaves a gap in the successful implementation of sustainability practices and policies, as they play a vital and central role in the HEIs’ everyday functioning. Hence, the EUSTEPs project launched two sustainability training courses dedicated exclusively to this segment of the university community, aiming to increase their knowledge on facts and tools for the best sustainability transition. The first short-term online training, organized by the University of Aveiro and Universidade Aberta, Portugal, was run in May 2021. The training targeted 27 non-academic staff from different sectors. The second online training course was implemented one year later and involved 17 elements from the previous training. The results showed very high levels of overall satisfaction and full achievement of the participants’ expectations in sustainability issues. The non-academic staff learned and discussed the human–environment relationship, tracked and discussed their personal ecological footprint in the workspace, actively participated on how to run the university ecological footprint calculator, developed within the EUSTEPs project, and felt mobilized to implement actions to reduce their university’s environmental impacts (as well as in their general daily activities). Similar training programs can be used to impower non-academic staff for the implementation of sustainability in other higher education institutions, hence contributing to a successful integrated sustainability approach for the whole school.
Driving eco-innovation in supply chains through multi-stakeholder collaboration: a review and research agenda

This article examines the concept of eco-innovation (EI) and its role in achieving sustainable economic growth by integrating environmental and social considerations. It focuses on identifying key practices and relationships that promote EI in supply chains through multi-stakeholder collaboration. By systematically reviewing existing literature, the article highlights the challenges and opportunities of implementing eco-innovative practices. It emphasizes the importance of collaborative networks, including companies, suppliers, universities, governments and civil society, in facilitating EI within supply chains. The findings aim to assist firms and practitioners in comprehending the crucial concepts and relationships related to eco-innovation in supply chains. The article serves as a comprehensive overview of the importance of eco-innovation, the role of collaborative networks and multi-stakeholder engagement and the need to adopt a holistic approach to drive eco-innovative practices in supply chains for sustainable economic growth. Additionally, the article suggests potential areas for future research in this field.
The mediating roles of cost leadership and cost focus strategies on innovation capabilities and export performance: rResults from an emerging country

Although there are several studies analyzing how cost leadership and cost focus competitive strategies influence export performance, this article examines the relationship between innovation capabilities (ICs) and export performance (ExPf), as well as the mediating effects of cost leadership and cost focus competitive strategies among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Mozambique. Based on empirical survey data collected from 250 SME managers in Mozambique, we utilized Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) for data analysis. Findings demonstrate that both cost leadership and cost focus competitive strategies partially mediate the ICs-ExPf relationship. Furthermore, these competitive strategies enhance the direct effect of ICs on export performance. These results suggest that SMEs from emerging countries, such as Mozambique, can effectively develop ICs and leverage cost leadership and cost focus advantages to successfully compete in international markets. The implications of this study are significant for owners and managers of SMEs from emerging countries, as it provides valuable insights into the impact of cost leadership and cost focus advantages of firms’ innovation capabilities. By understanding these relationships, SMEs can make more informed decisions and adopt more effective management approaches when seeking to compete in internationally, particularly among SMEs in emerging countries.
Is a good story enough?: a critical analysis of storyteller roles in tourism

As storytelling influences consumer attitudes and opinions, conditioning the tourist experience by appealing to the imagination, this paper reviews the literature covering the analysis of 66 papers that focus on the storytelling of the visitor/tourist as the main subject. The article is divided into four main themes: (a) storytelling as a tool to attract tourists; (b) the role of the storyteller; (c) the tourist as a storyteller; and (d) what makes a good story. The Hoshin Kanri Matrix was used to showcase each of the main themes. Although storytelling has been widely used to attract tourists, it is crucial that tourist-based storytelling can be a credible substitute for destination-based storytelling, as empathy, authenticity and the emotional attachment of tourists as storytellers play an important role as “good stories,” transforming and co-creating their experiences that emerge from the interaction of tourists, residents, and intermediaries.
