- Walking and cycling friendliness as proxies to retrofit active transport infrastructurePublication . Pais, Filipe; Sousa, Nuno; Jesus, Eduardo Natividade; Rodrigues, João CoutinhoActive transport modes, such as walking and cycling, have been promoted by scientific studies and policymakers due to congestion-reduction and health benefits, and low environmental impact. However, adequate infrastructure is necessary for citizens to exercise their choice for those modes. This article presents a case study on the active mode infrastructural condition of a city which, as many others, privileged motorized modes in its growth during the 20th century. Using walking and cycling friendliness as evaluators of the infrastructural condition and a Geographic Information System environment as the calculational tool, an accessibility-based analysis was carried out that enables policymakers to identify the main issues affecting those modes and, most importantly, to pinpoint specific problems that are common to both modes. The methodological approach is scalable to any city size and is a decision-aid tool that can provide value mainly by identifying those common problems which can be efficiently addressed in future infrastructural improvements and maintenance actions. For the case study, common problems turn out to lay along large, distributor roads which fail to provide active travellers with adequate safety from traffic. Based on the results, a concrete intervention plan is proposed, for which a cost-benefit analysis was carried out.
- Gilbert Simondon's ethics of technology: an extended analysisPublication . Jacquinet, MarcThis essay explores Simondon's ethical perspective on technique and technological change, highlighting both the philosophical foundations and practical implications of his thought. It will examine how Simondon's ethics emerges from his ontological and epistemological commitments, while drawing connections to contemporary technological challenges and comparing his approach with other philosophical traditions. By engaging with Simondon's work as a living philosophical resource rather than a historical artifact, we can discover valuable insights for navigating our increasingly complex technological environment.
- Knowledge and perceptions of regional anesthesia and block room usage among orthopaedic surgeons and nursesPublication . Mendes, Ângela Barbosa; Silva, Carlota Carvalho da; Dias, Raquel; Nunes, Catarina S.; Machado, Humberto; Lages, NeusaBackground: The performance of regional anesthesia (RA) in a block room (BR) may have an impact on the efficiency of the orthopaedics operating room (OR). The aim of this study was to understand the knowledge of healthcare professionals regarding RA and BR. Methods: Two types of pilot surveys were developed and applied in three independent hospitals. Statistical validation of the survey was performed (Cronbach alpha coefficient and factor analysis), followed by its restructuring. Validated surveys were randomly delivered to orthopaedists and OR nurses from our institution, and a descriptive analysis was performed. Results: The pilot surveys presented a Cronbach alpha of 0.533 and 0.417 in the orthopaedic and OR nurse groups, respectively. Two questions in each survey were removed, increasing the internal consistency of the final restructured surveys. There was a total of 126 validated surveys completed (46 by orthopaedists and 76 by OR nurses). Both groups consider that, compared with general anesthesia, RA is associated with better pain control (95.7%/93.4%), fewer side effects (63%/73.7%), and improved patient satisfaction (84.7%/69.7%). Both groups would choose RA for themselves (89.1%/89.5%) and recommend it to a family member (89.1%/92.1%). Regarding BR, 80.4% of orthopaedists agreed that it is associated with less time wasted in anesthetic preparation, higher productivity (65.2%), and greater efficacy (65.2%). Conclusions: Most orthopaedists and OR nurses recognized the various benefits of RA. Orthopaedists agreed that BR improves outcomes and provides efficiency gains in the OR. Genuine support from the entire OR team can play a critical role in the change.

- Cultural lags: ageism, sexism, localism: a cultural agenda for Europe in the Twenty First CenturyPublication . Faria, Luisa Leal deWhen recently reading an autobiographical text by a young English writer, published in 2018, I was struck with a growing difficulty in working out the meanings of countless references that crop up in every page, connected with places, media productions, public personalities and events that make up the daily life of a social group within the Millennial generation. I then tried to isolate the layers of incomprehension that obscured several cultural meaning, and found that one might be due to a generational difference, another to the persistence or the coming back of some gender conventions that were supposed to have been overcome after the turn of the century, and lastly, another might be due to specific meanings given to places that become embedded in trends and fashions specific to very local and socially restricted groups. Although not invested with earthshattering meanings, these cultural gaps are significant, and to try to bridge them may help bring different generations closer, offer a better understanding of gender roles in contemporary society, and stress the relevance of the local in a globalised world
