Abstract(s)
This manuscript focuses on the study of Portuguese 19th century society, particularly the fifth and sixth decades. Through the pages of "O Jornal do Porto", a daily publication, it’s possible to identify the problems, the struggles and ‘zeitgeist’ of that time, as well as attempts at a political influence. This study aims to contribute to a better understanding of Portuguese society and underlines the role of the press in the understanding of community life, especially in what concerns emigration, from the North of Portugal to Brazil.
