- The role of self-efficacy in online education: Perspectives, challenges, and practical implicationsPublication . Goulão, Fátima; REDINE, Red de Investigación e Innovación Educativa, Madrid, SpainWith the exponential growth of online learning, driven by the rapid evolution of digital technology and the need for flexibility in learning, there is a need to understand how psychological factors, such as self-efficacy, influence students’ experience in this environment. This article aims to explore the concept of self-efficacy in the context of online learning, examining its implications for student engagement, performance, and satisfaction. Self-efficacy theory describes an individual’s belief in their ability to successfully perform a particular task or achieve a specific goal. In online teaching, self-efficacy plays a crucial role as students face unique challenges such as time management, self-discipline and adapting to learning technologies. In our research we used a sample of 204 online students. Of these, 84.3% are female and 15.7% are male. The average age is 40 (SD 9.1), with a maximum age of 65 and a minimum of 21. The mode was 39 years. The self-efficacy questionnaire had a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.943. The average grade in the course is 16, with a mode of 17. The correlation between the grades and the level of self-efficacy was positive, but not statistically significant. In other words, our data is in line with the theory, despite not being statistically significant. One of the possible explanations could be the small variability of the classifications, which are quite high.

- Anesthesia and postoperative analgesia for cesarean section: a retrospective observational studyPublication . Pombo, André; Guimarães, Henrique; Araújo, Ana M.; Nunes, Catarina S.; Cabido, Hermínia; Lemos, PauloObjectives: The current state of the art for c‑section anesthesia includes the use of regional anesthesia techniques because of their effectiveness, safety, and extended postoperative analgesia. This study aimed to analyze the anesthetic techniques employed for c‑section and postoperative analgesic regimens and to identify predictive factors for postoperative pain, postoperative complications, and hospitalization time. Study Design: A retrospective, observational study was conducted on pregnant women who underwent c‑section between January and December 2021. Demographic data, medical comorbidities, indications for c‑section, anesthetic techniques, and postoperative outcomes (pain, complications, and hospitalization time) were registered. Linear and logistic regression were applied for data analysis. Results: Data from 925 women who underwent c‑sections were analyzed. Combined spinal–epidural anesthesia was the most used technique for elective c‑sections (423 out of 430 women), while general anesthesia was commonly used in emergent procedures (29 out of 39 women). Epidural analgesia was the most commonly used technique for postoperative pain management (83%), and pruritus (8.9%) and headaches (4.1%) were the most frequently registered complications. Risk factors for moderate/severe pain included lower body mass index, conversion to general anesthesia, and the use of systemic analgesia. Preeclampsia and intrathecal morphine increased postoperative complications. General anesthesia and some postoperative complications were predictors for longer hospitalization times. Conclusions: This study suggests that a multimodal analgesic approach with neuraxial morphine and/or local anesthetics, nonsteroidal anti‑inflammatory drugs, and acetaminophen is central to achieve an effective postoperative analgesia after a c‑section. However, further studies should investigate the optimal neuraxial analgesic combination to minimize side effects.

- Earnings management: Is accrual usage abusive?: auditors perception of accounting practices in AngolaPublication . Pinho, Carlos; Santos, Paula; Martinho, Carla; Edelweiss Applied Science and TechnologyThis research explores auditors' perceptions regarding earnings management practices in Angola, with a particular focus on the use of accruals as a mechanism for manipulating financial results. The study also aims to identify the accounting areas most affected by such aggressive practices. A quantitative approach, based on a linear regression model, was adopted through a structured survey conducted in 2024 among auditors from the Big Four firms operating in Angola. The results indicate that accruals are perceived to be used at a significant level as a means of manipulating earnings. Revenue and receivables, personnel expenses, and inventories were identified as the most frequently manipulated areas. The findings also support the emphasis of International Auditing Standard (ISA) 240 on revenue as a key risk area for fraud. The study contributes to a better understanding of financial reporting practices in emerging economies. It provides practical insights for auditors, regulators, and other stakeholders, highlighting the need for focused audit procedures in high-risk areas in Angola.
- Intercultural competences and ethics in scientific research with refugee women: principles and challenges for an inclusive practicePublication . Ramos, Natália; Sampaio, CatarinaThe present study examines the importance of intercultural competences in scientific research with refugee women, with a particular emphasis on ethical and methodological frameworks, as well as the challenges involved in fostering inclusive research practices. The primary objective is to explore how developing intercultural competences enhances ethical, inclusive, and culturally sensitive research. A qualitative approach was employed, based on a comprehensive review of the pertinent literature, with a focus on intercultural competence models such as those proposed by Deardorff (2009) and Bennett (2013), whose pedagogical approaches underpin their application in the context of scientific research involving refugee women. Additionally, the study engages with theoretical perspectives on intercultural communication, the intercultural paradigm, intersectionality, and the ethics of representation, thus providing a critical lens through which to scrutinize the dynamics of power and representation. The analysis underscores the indispensable role that cultural adaptation and the development of intercultural competences play in surmounting communication barriers, establishing trust, and avoiding the perpetuation of stereotypes and inequalities. Theoretical models are shown to provide valuable tools for ethical and methodological adaptations in research involving ethnocultural populations, fostering an educational process that emphasizes the recognition and mitigation of power imbalances in researcher-participant interactions. In conclusion, incorporating intercultural competences into scientific research with refugee women is essential to ensuring the quality and relevance of research outcomes. This approach facilitates more accurate and contextually informed interpretations of participants’ narratives and contributes to both advancing scientific knowledge and informing the development of well-informed public policies.
