- A ocupação do Neolítico Médio da Lapa do Fumo (Sesimbra) e sua cronologia absolutaPublication . Cardoso, João LuísLapa do Fumo is a karst cavity located west of Sesimbra, dominating the ocean from the edge of the culminating platform of the Jurassic limestone massif that extends to Cape Espiche!. One of the main archaeological results of the excavations carried out in the 1960’s by Eduardo da Cunha Serrão and Gustavo Marques was the identification of the so-called "Red Layer", due to the impregnation of red ocher, used ritually in the framework of the funeral ceremonies then performed there. The chronology of this layer was dubious, due to the existence of two statistically different dates, one, older, using fragments of charcoal, which pointed to the beginning of the Middle Neolithic, another, more recent, using human bones, which indicated the Final Neolithic. Everything indicated that it would be a deposit of the Final Neolithic, bearing in mind the occurrence of some unknown archaeological artifacts in the Middle Neolithic, such as schist decorated plaques, some head pins and carinated bowls. Considering the importance of clarifying the chronology of this ritual deposit, which is frequently mentioned in publications of the specialty, a fragment of calcaneus collected in 1965 in a layer immediately based on the "Red Layer" was dated by AMS technique. The chronology obtained is still inserted in the Middle Neolithic, confirming the result of the first date that placed the formation of the "Red Layer" in the Middle Neolithic. Consequently, the result previously obtained on human bones must refer to the upper layer, whose accumulation extended at least over the Final Neolithic period, thus explaining the presence of artifacts characteristic of that time, which were previously attributed to the "Red Layer" by the two authors of the excavations. The chronology of the "Red Layer" was thus definitively clarified, which corresponds to an important contribution to the funerary rituals observed in natural caves in Extremadura during the Middle Neolithic.
- An unnatural history of destruction: catastrophe and the cityPublication . Ferraro, GianfrancoThis chapter focuses on the urban space as a space of catastrophe. In particular, it considers earthquakes and human-caused destructive events. By drawing on Foucault’s notion of heterotopias, De Martino’s reflections on cultural apocalypses and Assmann’s notion of cultural memory, it reveals the key role played by catastrophes in the recreation and re-imagination of urban spaces. It also considers their relevance to art – in particular architecture, sculpture, and poetry – when it comes to reconfiguring forms of living and recreating a common ethos for survivors and inhabitants.
- The influence of ecological concern on green purchase behaviorPublication . Fontes, Eva; Moreira, Antonio; Carlos, VeraThe present paper seeks to address a gap in the literature regarding green marketing and examines the relationship between ecological concern, inward and outward environmental attitudes, purchasing behavior and environmental behavior as antecedents of green purchasing behavior. The data was gathered through an online survey carried out in Portugal with 530 valid answers. Structural Equation Modelling Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) was used to evaluate the model. A t-test was applied to identify differences between men and women. The results show that ecological concern, environmental attitude, environmental behavior and purchase intention are good predictors of green purchase behavior. Women scored higher than men on all variables, meaning that they are indeed superior environmentalists than men. Green purchase behavior is strongly influenced by both purchase intention and environmental behavior, so green brands should focus on targeting individuals that already take some actions in what concerns the environment, or to those who intend to do so.
- Agrarian migrant workers in times of Covid-19 pandemic: the cases of Spain and PortugalPublication . Jacquinet, Marc; Bussotti, LucaThe research addresses the impact of the pandemic on rural migrant workers in two Southern European countries that are at the center of a restructured supply chains of fresh vegetables: Portugal and Spain, where a new political economy of agriculture emerged in the last decades. These two well-known countries for wine produce also olive, olive oils, almonds, tomatoes, oranges, grapes, and other fruits and vegetables. Traditionally, the workers were still in the 1990s mostly coming from local places. Now, immigrants from Sub-Saharan and Northern Africa and from Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia are a large part of the agrarian labor force. The vulnerability, discrimination, and difficulties of livelihood of these migrants workers are common currency and, despite contradictory economic incentives, the pandemic has made matters worst, especially for women and individuals not speaking the local languages. After describing the historical evolution and differences of the agrarian sectors of the two countries for fresh fruits and vegetables, we discuss the impact of the pandemic with a focus on gender. Whereas the situation before the pandemic was precarious and slowly improving on some counts, namely the increase of worker organization, the current process is one of recess. The paper identifies questions neglected by the literature on the pandemic in rural areas, in particular the vulnerability of immigrant workers to hunger, austerity, gender divide and discrimination, health risks, heavy constrained work, deportation, joblessness, and the lack of policies to ease social and economic ills beyond the focus on temporary normalization and repression.
- Impact of export promotion programs on export performancePublication . Mota, Jorge; Moreira, Antonio; Alves, AlexandraThis research examines the relationship of Export Promotion Programs (EPPs), sponsored by a Portuguese Regional Association for Development on Trade and Industry, with firms’ export performance. To investigate this, two models were applied using panel data analyses that relate export performance to variables such as participation in EPPs, age and size of firms. Data on 198 firms for the sampling period 2010 and 2018 was drawn from a Portuguese Regional Development Association and SABI (Iberian Balance sheet Analysis System) database. The results show that participation in EPPs does have a positive influence on the export performance of firms, especially for those firms with previous export experience, demonstrating the importance of using these programs. Findings also document that firm size relates positively export performance, whereas firms age show a negative effect on export performance, suggesting that larger firms with more resources positively influence exports and an increase in firms’ age may increase their cultural inertia, inability to change strategies, decreasing their export performance, respectively. Finally, the participation in EPPs seems not to influence export performance for firms without previous export experience. The research contributes to the literature providing evidence on the role of EPP on firms’ export performance behavior promoted by regional development associations.
