- Online courses, diverse publics and learning attitudesPublication . Moreira, DarlindaThe importance of new information technology, particularly for the domains of work, leisure and access to information and knowledge has become a fact of life. The general meaning of technology includes technical, cultural, social and organizational aspects, and, since people in general are among the factors that improve social innovation and technological purposes, the existence of a large number of citizens familiarized and skilled with digital technologies is of most importance not only for the consolidation of technological daily practices but also to nourish a cultural environment that expands markets, knowledge and technological artifacts. This poster presents the preliminary results of ongoing research that aims to understand diversity in online courses mainly in regard to how people look for and use online courses to meet their different needs. In particular it aims to uncover new potentials and contributions of information technologies that can trigger individual change to meet the challenges of contemporary societies. It presents a case study of a 54 year old retired woman enrolled in the first year of one of the new undergraduate programs offered by Universidade Aberta, Portugal whose pedagogical model relies integrally on online courses. The data are explored by focusing on the interconnections among three different axes: digital culture and new opportunities; new publics and their intellectual needs; and the relationship with knowledge that implies a new attitude towards learning.
- An evaluation of the adequacy of project network generators with systematically sampled networksPublication . Vanhoucke, Mario; Coelho, José; Debels, Dieter; Maenhout, Broos; Tavares, Luís ValadaresThis paper evaluates and compares different network generators to generate project scheduling problem instances based on indicators measuring the topological network structure. We review six topological network indicators in order to describe the detailed structure of a project network. These indicators were originally developed by [L.V. Tavares, J.A. Ferreira and J.S. Coelho, The risk of delay of a project in terms of the morphology of its network, European Journal of Operational Research 119 (1999), 510–537] and have been modified, or sometimes completely replaced, by alternative indicators to describe the network topology. The contribution of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we generate a large amount of different networks with four project network generators. Our general conclusions are that none of the network generators are able to capture the complete feasible domain of all networks. Additionally, each network generator covers its own network-specific domain and, consequently, contributes to the generation of data sets. Secondly, we perform computational results on the well-known resource-constrained project scheduling problem to prove that our indicators are reliable and have significant, predictive power to serve as complexity indicators.
- O-minimal Čech cohomologyPublication . Edmundo, Mário; Peatfield, N. J.We prove the existence of a Čech cohomology theory in arbitrary o-minimal structures with definable Skolem functions satisfying the Eilenberg–Steenrod axioms.
- A study on Moodle's performancePublication . Coelho, José; Rocio, VitorLearning Management Systems (LMS) are essential tools to the modern teaching institutions. Moodle is an open source LMS, widely used by open and distance teaching universities, as well as support to face to face courses. There are almost 40,000 registered Moodle sites, all over the world. Moodle can be installed in a wide range of environments: operating systems (Linux, Windows), supporting databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, ...), and hardware. This paper addresses the issue of Moodle’s performance within different environments, and under different loads. What is worth changing and what isn’t to improve performance? When load increases, what should be changed in order to obtain the largest performance gain? To answer these questions, it is important to subject the application, in a test environment, to the real conditions of use. In order to do it, we use historical data on the use of Moodle in Universidade Aberta. Several Moodle instances will be subject to different load levels and the resulting performance will be measured. It is difficult to estimate instantaneous load, even in a working site, where users’ habits are known. The number of users is an easier question to address and may be estimated by the number of teachers and students that will be using the LMS. So, in order to estimate future load, we present a conversion method according to the present level of use in this university.
- Scenario-based approach to the emerging communities of learning and teaching in online educationPublication . Jacquinet, Marc; Caetano, João RelvãoThe recent past has been of plenty of attempts and positive outcomes in online education. Most universities and tertiary education institutions are at least paying lip service to the trend and have teams working on extending training and education programs on internet or intranet based schemes. The trend is clear, online teaching and learning are the way forward. However, the way it will be and the interaction with other trends and processes are not that well known and clearly understood. The overall trend for online training and e-learning is quite clear; we are now entering in the mass take-off
