a pesca.
perspectiva do mar, o lazer e o divertimento.
marcas genuínas no tempo.
Abstract: This study investigates a traditional fishing community in Vila Chã, as well as the impacts it has been suffering during the last few decades, regarding the economic, social, demographic and cultural level, associated to the evolution of the fishing activity which had achieved some relevance in other times. After Portugal had joined the European Union, the fishing sector faced a serious crisis as it was mainly formed by small and old-fashioned boats and by aged active people, and this became an obstacle to the fishing development. The fishing community of Vila Chã is nowadays constituted by 10 boats and 20 fishermen. These fishermen face the sea backed by the women who support them. They help them with fishing tasks and, if necessary, they face the sea with no fear at all. This traditional fishing community is now facing a crucial issue: its own preservation. The tough and hard condition of the sea works as well as the compulsory schooling for the young people and the parent’s dream of seeing their children taking a well-paid and less dangerous job gave the youngsters a new perspective of the sea – that of fun and entertainment. This new system of life as well as the growing expansion of information technology, especially the Internet have propelled the exchange between different cultures, stopping the isolation of this community and leading it towards a more intercultural phase. However, this interculturality will only be possible if the fishing community of Vila Chã will manage to keep some of its genuine traces through time.
