Abstract(s)
The European Renaissance looked upon History as a consistent source to transmit exempla, a trustworthy and unhelpful repository for the purpose of ars bene scribendi, of enkyklios paideia, at the service of studia humanitatis towards the promotion of dignitas homini. The humanists laboriously devoted themselves to compelling quotations and aphorisms, gathered in encyclopedic works combining History, Rhetoric, Literature and Pedagogy. Fray Luis de Granda will follow and amplify all these tendencies, being aware of the Senequian epistle Longum iter est per praecepta, breue et efficax per exemplum. One of the most poignant concerns was to write not only for the ecclesiastic community but also for those who were new in the issues and problems of faith. We will recognize the main features of Granadaâs treatises and his oratory, wondering his purposes and motivations, without underestimating the relationships and influences he built throughout his life. We will analyse the encyclopedic production of the author, recognizing the quantity, quality and projection of his works and his Collectanea moralis philosophiae, in particulary reviewing some images, metaphors, similes underlying the concepts of philosophia, sapientia, libertas and felicitas.
