Abstract(s)
Access to education and training for minority groups, such as the prison population, has been of concern to various international organisations, as can be seen from the European Prison Rules, which date back to the beginning of this century. In line with these concerns and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, this study aims to show how mass prison health education in Brazil can contribute to improving the health of the prison population. The work is based on Tripp's (2005) action research methodology and highlights the strategic importance of education in prison health to induce changes in work processes, which can be applied in Brazil's Unified Health System to promote and improve health care for people deprived of their liberty. A Training Trail was developed, vailable on the Virtual Learning Environment of the Unified Health System (AVASUS) to train health professionals who work in the prison system, penal professionals and those deprived of their liberty. The results showed that being implemented in AVASUS expanded access to training, with students from all over the country joining in, and proved effective in dealing with the syphilis epidemic in the Brazilian prison system.
