Abstract(s)
O presente trabalho visa o estudo da sociedade portuguesa das décadas de
cinquenta e sessenta do século XIX, através do olhar do escritor Júlio Dinis, uma vez
que, na sua obra literária, do teatro e da poesia ao romance, passando pelo conto,
nos deixou muitas páginas com retratos socioculturais, reveladores do mundo em que
viveu e da sua forma de o encarar e de o sentir.
O romancista nasceu no Porto, onde cresceu, estudou, escreveu e viu publicados
alguns dos seus contos e romances em O Jornal do Porto, o jornal diário onde também
encontramos os anseios e os problemas de homens e mulheres e a presença da
mudança de mentalidades a que Júlio Dinis assistia e na qual desejou intervir
ativamente, através da sua escrita. No Porto e algures, no reino, entre 1850 e 1870,
numa aldeia ou freguesia, famílias e personagens dinisianas, com seus modos de
viver e de pensar, poderiam trabalhar e conviver, constituindo o núcleo de uma
sociedade em mudança - a mudança que tardava para colocar Portugal na rota da
modernidade. Este estudo do romance de costumes de Júlio Dinis, é um contributo
para o estudo da sociedade portuguesa em que viveu e escreveu e para a valorização
do papel da literatura para o conhecimento e a compreensão da vida em sociedade. No
campo da cultura portuguesa, este projeto apresenta-se como proposta de estudo e
exploração da relação entre o escritor e a sua obra literária, com a vida intelectual e
com o seu contexto político, social e cultural, que conseguimos identificar,
reconhecer e questionar através de O Jornal do Porto, um dos diários portuenses.
This manuscript focuses on the study of the Portuguese 19th century society, with particular emphasis on the fifty and sixty decades, through the work of writer Júlio Dinis. Through his books, scripts, poetry, romance and fables, Dinis left a vast sociocultural archive, revealing his world and his perspectives. Born and raised in Porto, he often wrote for the O Jornal do Porto, a daily publication where it is also possible to find evidence of the struggles and mentalities of that time, as well as Dinis’ attempt to intervene through his writings. His characters, their way of thinking and behaving are the core of a changing society wishing to bring Portugal to the forefront of the modern world. These study of Dinis’ work is a contribute to a better understanding of Portuguese society and underlines the role of literature in the understanding of community life. This project attempts to explore the relationship between the author, his literary work and how the intellectual and political, the social and cultural backgrounds were interpreted and ascertained through study of contemporary Portuguese daily press, represented by O Jornal do Porto.
