| dc.description.abstract | This dissertation analyses the sculpture Anja (1996), by Master José Rodrigues, as a work of synthesis and rupture within the landscape of contemporary Portuguese public art. The study is structured around three fundamental axes: the artistic trajectory of José Rodrigues and his investigation into female corporeality and the sacred; the iconographic genealogy of the angel, from the influences of ancient cultures to the contemporary period; and an iconological reading of the work in its original urban context – Praça de Lisboa (formerly Praça do Anjo), in Porto. Through a methodology that articulates Panofsky and Warburg's iconology – mediated by Didi-Huberman’s reading of the image as symptom and as survival – with Pierre Nora's concept of lieu de mémoire and Martin Heidegger's notion of world, the dissertation demonstrates that Anja breaks with angelological tradition by presenting a nude, fragmented and exposed female figure, merging the sacred and the profane. The analysis of the site reveals a deliberate symbolic inversion: where the female body was historically confined (in the Recolhimento do Anjo), José Rodrigues proposes its public exposure. The research concludes that Anja did not find its world – the urban space, itself in an identity crisis, failed to offer the conditions for the work to take root. Nevertheless, despite its theft and mutilation in 2006, the sculpture persists as a critical memory of the city, interrogating the relationship between public art, vulnerability and urban amnesia. Anja thus transcends its materiality to become an object of consciousness –and, perhaps, a promise of a time yet to come. | eng |
