| dc.description.abstract | Esta investigação examina os desafios e as soluções encontradas na adaptação da obra epistolar The Screwtape Letters, de C. S. Lewis, para áudio‑drama (The Screwtape Letters: First Ever Full-Cast Dramatization of the Diabolical Classic, dirigida por Paul McCusker em 2009), confrontando‑a com outras duas dramatizações: Dracula, de Bram Stoker, adaptado por Orson Welles para o Mercury Theatre on the Air (1938), e O Mandarim, de Eça de Queiroz, produzido para a rádio pública portuguesa em Teatro Imaginário (2003). O problema comparativo central interroga como figuras demoníacas literárias distintas, nomeadamente, o demónio burocrata (Screwtape), o vampiro sedutor (Drácula) e o tentador burguês de Eça, são reconfiguradas num meio exclusivamente sonoro. A literatura sobre áudio‑drama sublinha a especificidade do som e a sua autonomia, mas permanece relativamente marginalizada nos estudos de adaptação. Procura-se colmatar essa lacuna, dialogando com autores como Gérard Genette e Linda Hutcheon, com a reflexão de André Bazin sobre a especificidade dos meios e com os debates em torno da intermedialidade, da ekphrasis e da transcodificação, abordando, neste percurso, a questão da fidelidade. Recorre‑se ainda às notas de Robert Bresson sobre o som como escrita e às normas da BBC para áudio‑dramas. O estudo reafirma o áudio‑drama como construtor do teatro na mente e como campo autónomo de investigação académica, demonstrando o seu potencial enquanto linguagem artística do século XXI e espaço privilegiado para repensar a persistência da figura demoníaca. | por |
| dc.description.abstract | This study examines the challenges and solutions involved in adapting the epistolary work The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis into audio drama (The Screwtape Letters: First Ever Full-Cast Dramatization of the Diabolical Classic, directed by Paul McCusker in 2009), setting it alongside two further dramatizations: Dracula by Bram Stoker, adapted by Orson Welles for the Mercury Theatre on the Air (1938), and O Mandarim by Eça de Queiroz, produced for the Portuguese public radio in Teatro Imaginário (2003). The central comparative problem asks how distinct literary demonic figures, namely the bureaucratic demon (Screwtape), the seductive vampire (Dracula), and Eça’s bourgeois tempter, are reconfigured within an exclusively acoustic medium. The literature on audio drama underlines the specificity of sound and the autonomy of the form yet remains relatively marginal within adaptation studies. This research seeks to address that gap by engaging with theorists such as Gérard Genette and Linda Hutcheon, with André Bazin’s reflections on medium specificity, and with debates on intermediality, ekphrasis and transcodification, while also considering fidelity as one of the critical issues raised by the corpus. The analysis further draws on Robert Bresson’s notes on sound as writing and on BBC guidelines for audio drama. The study reaffirms audio drama as a constructor of the theatre in the mind and as an autonomous area of academic enquiry, demonstrating its potential as an artistic language of the twenty-first century and as a space in which to rethink the persistence of the demonic figure. | eng |
