Abstract(s)
The present study aimed to examine the Portuguese consumer perception have regarding food labeling, with the main approach being the perception of nutritional labeling Front-OfPackage Nutri-Score. Reading and interpreting the food labeling present on food products can result in embarrassment and confusion for the individuals who do not have enough knowledge to interpret the statements indicated on the labeling, especially the statements that appear in the nutrition declaration in foods. Through the application of a questionnaire to the Portuguese population on the perception of food labeling and on Nutri-Score, it was verified that most of the population in this study justifies the non-reading and low frequency of reading the food labeling in the difficulty in the interpreting the labeling. It is on this basis that most of the population in this study justifies the non-reading and frequency of reading the food label. The population of this study is most of from Azores, where there is a greater degree of illiteracy on the part of the population, and it appears that a large part of this population does not read the food labeling during purchase of food products to improve their diet. However, it is possible to verify that using FOP nutrition labeling, the study population can read and interpret food products during their purchase, which allows for a healthier diet. Comparing different types of FOP labeling, it appears that the study population prefers the Nutri-Score, indicating that in addition to being easier to read and interpret, it is easier to compare different brands of the same type of product. The adoption of Nutri-Score labeling should be adopted by more brands to allow a better comparison of the various products present on the market, and thus enabling the adoption of a better diet by the population.
