Abstract(s)
This study focused on the identification and understanding of the motivations underlying women’s voluntary option for transection of fallopian tube as a contraceptive method, which may represent the closure of a biological cycle. The study was based on data obtained directly from 10 women at S. Francisco Xavier Hospital at Lisbon, hospitalized for transection of fallopian tube. A direct random interview methodology was used and data was recorded using an audioregistered procedure. As a complement, additional data from their personal clinical files were included in order to strengthen the research process. The results obtained brought about important insights on the initial question of our project: “What are women’s motivations to make an option for transection of fallopian tube as a contraceptive method?” The Jorge Vala’s analytical content technique was used as a methodology for data treatment. As a result 14 themes were obtained and grouped into 6 categories. From our analysis, the most important reasons for making an option for the transection of fallopian tube became clear: (1) freedom of choice, over knowledge; (2) transection of fallopian tube as a method allowing the closure of the reproductive cycle; (3) the affirmation of women’s autonomous decision; (4) the absence of a real alternative on the male’s side, since vasectomy is still affected by a masculine unfavourable social environment; (5) the end of the maternity cycle as a challenging beginning for a new reality; (6) sexual pleasure overcomes the surgical act. A final conclusion that could be drawn from the women’s contributions was the need to divulge information about less well-known contraceptive methods in order to facilitate more conscious choices. Moreover, it is imperative to involve and hold men responsible for their sexual and reproductive health, which will in turn influence those of women.
