Abstract(s)
Participation in youth sports can be influenced by the stereotypes/prejudices of parents and/or legal guardians of children and adolescents. Given the important role sport plays in the physical, social, and psychological development of children and adolescents, it is important to understand how families perceive and encourage the selection of sports modalities. This study used quantitative research methods, applying two questionnaires, the Peaceful Gender Attitude Scale (EAPG) and the Parental Behavior in Sport Questionnaire (QCPD), at a single time point. The sample comprised 406 mothers, fathers, and/or guardians of children aged between 6 and 18 years who have participated in federated sports for at least one year. It was concluded that the gender stereotypes of mothers, fathers, and legal guardians influence the selection of sports modalities, conditioning the choices of children and adolescents. However, mothers, fathers, and legal guardians of children and adolescents who participate in sports traditionally not associated with their gender, exhibit fewer behaviors that favor the traditional division of gender roles. Furthermore, parental attitudes more favorable to egalitarian gender roles are associated with beneficial parental behaviors regarding sports.
