Abstract(s)
Neste contexto, a LĂngua
The world as we knew it has changed with globalization. In this context, Foreign Language (FL) has assumed a major role in students' education, as it can provide them not only with language skills, but also with the increasingly necessary cultural skills. In these circumstances, it is essential that teachers rethink and develop their teaching practices in order to adapt to a new global society. In this dissertation, we argue that it is essential that LE teachers pay attention to the cultural issues underlying the relationships between individuals, which is to say, that they include in their work strategies and activities that enable the development of Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC), in order to endow students with a citizenship profile appropriate to the new demands of contemporaneity. The main objective of this study was to analyze whether and how intercultural competence is developed in the classroom context by a group of primary school teachers who teach PLE in the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR), both in official and in private schools. For this purpose, the concept of intercultural competence was characterized, as well as its importance in the practice of teaching as a foreign language, and, since Portuguese has the status of official language in the Macau SAR, a brief portrait of the linguistic landscape of the region was made. The fieldwork focused on the observation of the implementation of activities that could develop CCI by a group of primary school PLE teachers teaching in public and private schools. The information presented was collected through document analysis of material provided by the teachers, interviews, and naturalistic observation. Based on the analysis and reflection on the collected material, we suggest a set of practical didactic strategies that can be used by PLE teachers in primary schools in Macau in order to promote the development of CCI.
