Abstract(s)
The thesis «Marginality, marginals and deviation in Portuguese Sinodal constitutions in Iberian penitentials in the late middle ages, (14th and 15th centuries)», analyses the synodal constitutions, found in the Synodicon Hispanum II and the determinations of the following penitencials: Libro de las confesiones by Martin Pérez, Tratado de Confissom (Chaves 1489) and the Sacramental by Sanchez of Vercial, 14th and 15th centuries, in order to confirm how these normative sources, display important aspects of the daily life in the Portuguese medieval society, which allows us to understand and explain the point of view of Church and Society, towards those who, by their social behaviors, way of living, business activities or their beliefs, and sins, deviated from the established norms, therefore, lived as marginalized individuals. Through the critical analysis of these sources, we tried to identify the social behaviours, attitudes and practices, which were connected with processes and forms of marginalization associated with excommunication and penance, like theft, robbery and usury, prostitution, performative arts, witchcraft and divinatory practices as well as with those who professed different faiths, jews, muslims or heretics, and beggars.
