Abstract(s)
This research project aims to reveal the experiences of an intersex person, seeking to understand the theme of gender dissidence in their most significant dimensions. In methodological terms, a qualitative study was designed, in which life stories were collected through depth interviews, and the corpus was thematically analyzed using the phenomenological method. The first chapter sets out the theoretical framework, presenting the historical background, intersex activism and legislative changes in Portugal. The second, dedicated to the methodological design, justifies the analytical strategy and addresses the most relevant difficulties encountered, which led to a readjustment, with some ethical considerations. The third section presents and discusses the results, and brief final considerations are presented. The results suggest that the family, school, social environment, and support are the areas with most impact on self-determination and gender transition. Poor medical care and delayed access to sex reassignment surgery is one of the areas that reflects the lack of recognition of intersex people, negatively affecting the process of identity affirmation and the perception of social validation. The lack of positive role models and direct contact with intersex people contributes to difficulties in self-acceptance. The capacity for agency and speaking out on one's own behalf seem to contribute to personal empowerment, although in social terms the effects of revealing one's intersexuality point towards minimizing ignorance and therefore discrimination, but paradigmatically towards exclusionary discourses and attitudes.
