Na era da globalização, as noções de multilinguismo e multiculturalismo podem parecer premissas evidentes e inevitáveis. Contudo, a hegemonia do inglês e a massificação da cultura anglo-saxónica, a par de uma tendência para nacionalismos e regionalimos a que assistimos em anos recentes podem levar-nos a questionar estes princípios e o verdadeiro valor da diversidade. Neste contexto, as organizações internacionais constituem uma janela para o mundo das línguas de forma mais lata, replicando muitos dos conflitos e jogos de forças entre línguas e culturas que têm lugar na cena internacional. No presente trabalho de investigação, defendemos que a expansão do português no seio de organizações internacionais é um projeto viável, desde que selecionados os canais adequados e seguidas orientações claras em termos de planeamento linguístico, que privilegiem a cooperação entre países lusófonos e coloquem a adoção do português numa perspetiva de complementaridade à língua hipercentral (Calvet, 1999, 2002). Partindo da análise da situação atual em organizações internacionais que contam o português como uma das suas línguas oficiais/de trabalho, derivaremos critérios para a seleção de organizações-alvo para a expansão do português, procurando refletir, em paralelo, sobre instrumentos de planeamento da aquisição e planeamento de corpus que permitam cimentar o estatuto do português como língua global.
In the age of globalisation, the notions of multilingualism and multiculturalism might seem like evident and inevitable premises. However, the hegemony of the English language, along with the tendency for nationalisms and regionalisms that we have witnessed in recent years, may lead us to question these principles and the true value of diversity. In this context, international organisations are a window to the world of languages in a broader sense, as they mirror many of the conflicts and of the forces brought into play in the relationships between languages and cultures on the world stage. In this research project, we argue that the expansion of the Portuguese language within international organisations is a viable project, as long as the right channels are chosen, and there are clear guidelines in terms of language planning. These should make the most of the cooperation between lusophone countries and place the adoption of Portuguese under a light of complementarity towards English, the hipercentral language (Calvet, 1999, 2002). Starting with the analysis of the current situation in international organisations which already have Portuguese as one of their official/working languages, we will draw some criteria for selecting organisations that should be the target for the expansion of Portuguese. In doing so, we will also reflect on instruments in acquisition planning and corpus planning that will allow Portuguese to strenghten its status as a global language.
