Abstract(s)

Influenced by a Catholic education (his father was a priest), he attended the seminary in Beja, but abandoned it in 1903. From his resume were three exiles in France, two rocambolescas evasions of national dungeons, as well as direct participation in republican revolts, first against the Constitutional Monarchy and then against the Military Dictatorship. In 1959, the Salazarist New State instructed him a criminal process, due to the release of the novel When the Wolves Howl.It is this journey, in time of dictatorship, that we propose here to reconstitute, in the light of a problematic and objective exercise, constructed fundamentally from the primary sources consulted. The course of a man whose life program (the great meaning of his existence) was to be an exclusive writer in a sparsely populated country marked by high rates of illiteracy and where copyright was almost one mirage; at one time, add, marked by censorship and repression. Our representation of this route, also marked by shadows and lights, intends to assert itself as another contribution to unveil the life of a master read, admired and recommended, even by Antonio de Oliveira Salazar.
