"Que nunca caiam as pontes entre nós": um novo olhar sobre a mediação intercultural em contexto educativo

Abstract(s)
Nas sociedades contemporâneas, caracterizadas pela diversidade cultural, a
mediação assume grande importância, não só como ferramenta de suporte à
resolução de conflitos, mas também na sua função preventiva. Neste contexto, as
instituições educativas têm especial relevância, pois replicam a sociedade e
incluem uma capacidade transformadora. Desta forma, se a mediação
intercultural é necessária na sociedade, também o será em contexto educativo.
Através do presente estudo procurou-se delinear os contornos que a mediação
intercultural deve ter em contexto educativo e qual pode ser o papel das direções
escolares. Tomou-se como ponto de partida a análise das perceções dos
docentes relativamente às necessidades sentidas face à diversidade cultural, à
sua preparação para incluir atividades de mediação na sua prática letiva e ao
papel que as direções escolares desempenham.
Para a recolha de dados realizou-se um inquérito por questionário a docentes do
3º ciclo do ensino básico e do ensino secundário. Os resultados revelam que os
docentes não sentem dificuldade em lidar com a diversidade cultural em contexto
escolar, considerando-a uma oportunidade no ensino, mas reconhecem que a sua
formação inicial não os preparou devidamente para tal e que necessitam de
formação no domínio da mediação intercultural. A mediação é percecionada como
uma ferramenta de suporte às relações e ao estabelecimento de diálogo
intercultural, capaz de facilitar a gestão da sala de aula, e que poderá integrar o
currículo de forma transversal.
A investigação realizada permitiu inferir que a diversidade ainda representa um
desafio para as comunidades educativas, considerando-se necessário um plano a
nível nacional que promova a introdução da mediação e dos princípios da
interculturalidade neste contexto, numa perspetiva de extensão à sociedade em
geral.
In contemporary societies, characterized by cultural diversity, mediation assumes significant importance, not only as a tool to support conflict resolution but also in its preventive function. In this context, educational institutions have special relevance since they replicate society and include a transformative ability. Thus, if intercultural mediation is necessary in society, the educational context also demands it. The present study aimed to outline the contours that intercultural mediation should have in educational context and what can be the role of the school board. It was taken as a starting point the analysis of teacher’s perceptions regarding their needs when faced with cultural diversity, their preparation to include mediation activities in their teaching practice and the role that school boards play. Data collection was made through a survey applied to teachers from the 3rd cycle of basic education and high school level. The results show that teachers do not find it difficult to cope with cultural diversity in the school context, considering it a teaching opportunity, but recognize that their initial training did not properly prepare them and the need of training in the intercultural mediation field. Mediation is perceived as a tool to support relationships and the establishment of intercultural dialogue, able to facilitate the classroom management and that can integrate the curriculum in a transversal way. This research allowed to infer that diversity is still a challenge for educational communities, whereas there is a need for a plan at national level promoting the introduction of mediation and of the interculturality principles in this context, in the perspective of expansion to all society
