| dc.description.abstract | A língua portuguesa é falada por mais de 250 milhões de pessoas e é a mais falada no hemisfério sul. Até ao final do século XXI, este número poderá quase duplicar e será em África onde mais se falará português, sobretudo na África Austral. A África do Sul é a economia líder desta região e uma das mais emergentes do continente africano. Num país multicultural, a comunidade portuguesa é uma das que mais se destaca na sociedade sul-africana. Durante as últimas décadas, o ensino do português foi direcionado à sua comunidade, como língua de herança. Atualmente, apenas uma minoria dos alunos lusodescendentes aprendem português como tal. Ao mesmo tempo, novos públicos procuram aprender a língua portuguesa. A África do Sul é o país com maior imigração em África, (mais de 3 milhões de residentes estrangeiros vindos de todo o mundo), sendo Moçambique um dos países com maior representação. Para uma melhor compreensão desta conjuntura, é analisada, nesta dissertação, a política de língua na África do Sul durante e após o apartheid, assim como a política da língua portuguesa neste contexto. Num país com 11 línguas oficiais e 16 não oficiais, pretende-se compreender o atual potencial da língua portuguesa nesta sociedade multilingue. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | The Portuguese language is spoken by over 250 million people and is the most spoken in the southern hemisphere. By the end of the 21st century, this number can almost double and it will be in Africa where Portuguese will be spoken the most, especially in Southern Africa. South Africa is the leading economy in this region and one of the most emerging economies in the African continent. In this multicultural country, the Portuguese community is one of the most prominent in South African society. During the last decades, the Portuguese teaching was directed to their community heritage language. Currently, only a minority of Portuguese heritage students learn Portuguese as such. At the same time, new audiences seek to learn the Portuguese language. South Africa is the country with the largest immigration in Africa (more than 3 million foreign residents coming from all over the world), with Mozambique being one of the most important origins. For a better understanding of this situation, this dissertation analyzes the language policy in South Africa during and after apartheid, as well as the Portuguese language policy in this context. In a country with 11 official and 16 unofficial languages, it is intended to understand the current potential of the Portuguese language in this multilingual society. | pt_PT |
