Abstract(s)
Todas apresentam reconhecimento e
Elas
apontam sofrimento psíquico e dificuldades psicossociais e interculturais.
This work seeks to understand and analyze the situation of Brazilian mothers who live in the United States but do not have legal documentation. The research in question is qualitative. To this end, we did in-depth interviews with 12 immigrant women, with questions focused on: integration, quality of life, and mental health. In the context of integration, most of them demonstrate evidence of transnational migration in which they find themselves situated between North American and Brazilian cultures. All of them show recognition and gratitude for the opportunities obtained in the host country, but two do not consider themselves integrated into this country. It appears that the migratory status of the irregular situation brings emotional and psychological consequences for the well-being of these women when reporting depressive episodes, stress, and discrimination, with impacts on mental health, daily life, and life projects. They point to psychological distress and psychosocial and intercultural difficulties. Because they are mothers, their relationship with the country often occurs because of their children raised on North American soil. They appreciate the quality of life offered to their children from an economic perspective in this country. Because of their children, most of these mothers do not want to return to live in Brazil. The results point to the need for more studies in this area, for a more in-depth analysis, investigation, and discussion of the migratory situation, integration, identity, and mental health processes, as well as the development of strategies and policies in the context of irregular immigration, especially of undocumented immigrant women, with a view to a more adequate and coordinated intervention in this area.
