Abstract(s)
Violence in interpersonal relationships has gained increasing attention, both in the marital context and in dating relationships. And it was in this last context that the present study was reflected, as it recognized the importance of verifying this phenomenon, which could even lead to a marital relationship. And since São Tomé and Príncipe is a country with a majority of young people, I felt it was important to understand their perception of the most diverse forms of violence portrayed in literature and to understand whether young people experience their romantic relationships in contexts of violence, assessing whether legitimation and victimization are related to gender. Therefore, the general objective of this study is: what is the level of incidence of dating violence among young people in São Tomé and Principe and their level of understanding regarding abusive attitudes and situations? For the present study, the quantitative methodology was chosen with the application of questionnaire surveys at the Liceu Nacional educational establishment, given the significant concentration of young people, having chosen a youth population aged between 14 and 19, all 9th year students, 10th year, 11th year and 12th year of schooling. The empirical study allowed us to conclude that in essence, the majority of young people are aware of behaviors that constitute abuse, with emphasis on attitudes of physical, sexual and verbal violence, given that their explicitness allows quick perception. In relation to psychological violence, domination and control, as they assume subtle nuances, are not always easy to perceive, which is why, although equally repudiated by the young respondents, they showed slightly lower levels of disagreement. Finally, in social violence, it was clear that there is good perception and rejection when digital control is exercised, although, with regard to physical control and acts of domination, there were no percentage levels that represented more than half of the population surveyed.
