dc.description.abstractTomando como pano de fundo as celebrações dos 450 anos da publicação d’OsLusíadas de Luís Vaz de Camões e os vários discursos que se originaram nos media em torno das mesmas celebrações, o presente artigo visa analisar o contributo da obra para a formação e desenvolvimento do discurso orientalista em Portugal. É feito um levantamento dos termos utilizados para referir o povo de África, do Médio Oriente e da Índia ao longo da obra, comparando-os depois com representações em media modernos relativamente aos mesmos povos. Conclui-se que, apesar da distância temporal, essas mesmas representações apresentam maior continuidade e semelhanças do que rutura e diferenças. Na secção final, procura-se reavaliar as diferentes memórias sobre Camões e a sua obra, a história de Portugal e dos povos da África e da Ásia no mundo contemporâneo.pt_PT
dc.description.abstractUsing as its background the celebration of the 450 years since the publication of The Lusiads by Luís Vaz de Camões and the several discourses which have originated in the media around those same celebrations, this paper aims at analysing the contribution of this work for the shaping and development of Orientalist discourse in Portugal. I begin by listing the terms that Camões used to refer to Africans, Middle Easterners and Indians and then I compare them with modern media representations of the same peoples. I conclude that, despite the temporal difference, modern representations are defined by continuity and similarity rather than by rupture and difference. In the final section, I try to assess the different memories regarding Camões and his work as well as the history of Portugal and of the African and Asian people in the contemporary world.pt_PT
