Abstract(s)
A aproximação entre a literatura e as artes plásticas está presente em diversas obras literárias
consagradas pelo cânone, ou seja, em um conjunto de obras que são consideradas como
referência ao longo de um extenso período de tempo. Assim, esse diálogo estabelecido entre
a narrativa literária e as artes visuais torna-se umobjeto de estudo relevante para as pesquisas
a que se referem as interartes. Dessa forma, esta investigação tem como finalidade discutir
a importância do diálogo existente entre a literatura e as artes plásticas presentes nos textos
de Machado de Assis, sob a perspectiva dos estudos ecfrásticos. Segundo The Classical
Oxford Dictionary (2012: 495), a écfrase consiste numa: “descrição literária extensa e
detalhada de qualquer objeto, real ou imaginário”. Assim, pode-se declarar que a ekphrasis
é uma manifestação artística, no domínio interartes, estabelecendo relações entre a imagem
e a palavra, e que, segundo estudos feitos por teóricos da antiguidade até a modernidade,
proporcionou, nas obras de poetas e escritores, textos fascinantes e ricos de possibilidades
interpretativas. Na atualidade, ocorrem várias discussões sobre a forma como se lê e como
se lida com o outro, com aquele que não é semelhante ou idêntico a nós. O conceito de
“Imagologia” pretende oferecer um contributo a este tipo de debate, através do estudo das
imagens e estereótipos, mentalidades, atitudes, etc., de forma a favorecer a análise de
determinados padrões de relação entre os seres humanos. Este estudo, que agora se
apresenta, parte do contexto cultural representado pela narrativa ficcional de Machado de
Assis, e tem como objetivo analisar o modo como o escritor faz “ver”, por meio de uma
linguagem pictórica, as relações humanas entre os indivíduos que fazem parte da sociedade
carioca do século XIX. Neste cenário, a Imagologia estuda a proximidade entre os povos e
as culturas, com a finalidade de desenvolver uma conexão entre as imagens que são
expressas na literatura, fazendo questionar a imagem que se tem sobre o outro, e levando a
inferir a respeito desta figura como um objeto que pode remeter a uma conjuntura histórica.
Isto posto, o estudo aqui apresentado pretende possibilitar a reflexão e a compreensão dos
diálogos sociais que se formam durante a leitura das obras de Machado de Assis, e, além
disso, compreender melhor quais os critérios que foram estabelecidos pelo autor na
composição das suas produções.
The approximation between literature and the visual arts is present in several literary works consecrated by the canon, that is, in a set of works that are considered as a reference in a certain period. Accordingly, this dialogue established between the literary narrative and the visual arts became a relevant subject of study for the researches that refer to the interarts. Therefore, this research is intended to discuss the importance of the existing dialogue between literature and the visual arts present in Machado de Assis' texts, fromthe perspective of ekphrastic studies, which according to The Classical Oxford Dictionary (2012), in the ecphrases approach: “an extensive and detailed literary description of any object, real or imaginary” (p. 495). In this way, we can declare that ekphrasis is an artistic manifestation, in the field of interarts between image and word, and that from its studies made by theorists from antiquity to modernity, this description provided the works by poets and writers, texts much more fascinating and interpretive. Nowadays, we live at a time when there are several discussions about the aspect of how we read and deal with the other, with what is not similar to us. Imagology intends to offer inputs to the debate, through the study of images and stereotypes, mentalities, attitudes, etc., to favor the analysis of certain standards of the relationship between human beings. This study starts from the cultural context represented by Machado de Assis's fictional narrative and aims to analyze how the writer makes us “see”, through a pictorial language, the human relations between people who are part of the society of the nineteenth-century carioca. In this scenario, Imagology studies the proximity between peoples and cultures, to develop a connection between the images that are expressed in the literature, making us question the image we have about the other, leading us to infer about this figure as an object that can refer us to a historicalsituation. For this reason, these studies will enable reflection and understanding of the social dialogues that are formed during the reading of Machado de Assis' works, and, in addition, will allow for a better understanding of the criteria which have been established by the author in the composition of his narrative.
