A Ilha da Madeira manteve elevadas taxas de analfabetismo até à segunda metade do século XX, de modo mais acentuado do que em Portugal Continental. Esse fenómeno estava associado ao lento e desigual desenvolvimento socioeconómico entre as diferentes localidades da Ilha. Também a escolarização foi irregular na oferta e na frequência. A construção de um sentido histórico para compreender e aprofundar o conhecimento sobre a relação entre sociedade e escolarização na Ilha da Madeira, pode obter-se a partir de uma observação que cruze escolarização e alfabetização. É essa observação que aqui se apresenta, estudando em termos estatísticos, a evolução do ensino primário na Madeira e comparando os resultados com estudos realizados para todo o país,
Illiteracy rates were consistently high in Madeira until the second half of the 20th century, even more so than in mainland Portugal. This phenomenon was associated with the slow and uneven socioeconomic development of the different communities throughout the island. The offer and frequency of schooling was also equally irregular. The construction of historical meaning aiming to understand the relationship between society and schooling in Madeira can be achieved comparing the data on schooling and literacy. The statistical observation presented in this paper is the evolution of Primary Schooling in Madeira, comparing data related to the islands and data related to the whole of Portugal.
