Abstract(s)
This work presents and discusses the development of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) specifically designed to convey a specialization course for middle school Science teachers through distance learning strategies. The course was conceptually devised to respect and utilize the teachers’ previous knowledge and professional experience, as well as the places where they work and the teaching-learning dynamics that they put into effect when teaching Science to their own students. Nevertheless, it encourages the “learn-by-making” approach as its method relies mainly upon questioning, investigation and experimentation. It also invites the teacher to join practical-reflexive activities that arise from the contact and rapport with original, trustworthy multimedia materials. Because its proposal is based on guiding activities rather than on the traditional presentation format frequently adopted for training courses, the making of the instructional design encountered several challenges as it sought to maintain the original character of the project. This work describes the nature of such challenges, as well as the solutions found for building the VLE in the Moodle platform, and proposes insights regarding the future use of this course by teachers of public schools throughout Brazil.
