Abstract(s)
O novo
When, on February 1, 1908, King D. Carlos and the royal prince D. Luís Filipe were murdered in Praça do Comércio, an audacious and extensive political/maritime plan was also ended. Taking shape in the wake of Brazilian independence, he was guided by the construction of a maritime empire in Africa. Concomitantly, a new attitude towards thalassic matters developed in Europe, now seen as a field of opportunities and fruition and not just hardship and labour. The new scientific knowledge, the creation of the beach concept and summer holidays practices, the transport revolution, and the concern with the prevention of shipwrecks and assistance to the castaways, contributed to this new positioning. If in the Lusitanian panorama, the maritime relationship of D. Carlos, was all too evident and widely known, with special emphasis on the scientific aspect, in the case of D. Luís Filipe, it was unknown, even non-existent, to the public! Thus, it was the same prince-sea binomial (also extended to the royal family) with special emphasis on the political, diplomatic, intellectual, and recreational aspects that are exposed and discussed here. Likewise, a biographical work on the life and deeds of the prince is presented, with elements hitherto unknown, which was intended to be the most comprehensive and complete.
