Abstract(s)
Food is an indispensable element for the good maintenance of life and it makes part of people´s daily routine. People’s choice in food is influenced by many factors such as taste, price, convenience, health, environmental sustainability and religion beliefs that are inserted in people´s culture. This work is intended to evaluate how religion influences people´s way of eating, particularly in the catholic communities and the Seventh-day Adventists in Cape Verde. Fir this, a qualitative methodology was applied, using semi-structured interviews Through the analysis of the reports from the interviews made to 30 participants, it was possible to identify three main categories: i) the relation of the participant with the religion; ii) the influence of religion on eating; iii) and the evaluation of the eating practices proposed by religion for health/wellbeing. It was found that the Seventh-day Adventists are more committed to their religion than Catholics. On the other hand, it was found that the religion influences the Adventists daily eating choices in terms of purchasing and consumption. This difference occurs to the Catholics only on special dates such as Ash Wednesday and the Fridays before Easter. The Adventists reported that the practice of their religion brings some benefits for their health and wellbeing. On the contrary, Catholics did not identify direct benefits in practicing their religion in terms of health, although they noted that their religion contributes to their well-being.
