Abstract(s)
Since the end of the 20th century, there has been a growing interest in the development of socioemotional skills in children and young people, leading to the emergence of various programs aimed at promoting them. The Ubuntu Leadership Academy (ALU) is one of these programs, and in 2019, the Directorate-General for Education (DGE) made it available to schools integrated into Priority Educational Intervention Territories (TEIP), with the aim of contributing to the success of students through the development of social skills. Two years later, the program was expanded to all schools that expressed interest in the program. Given the success of the ALU program and the absence of any formal evaluation of the program, which would constitute an important support for decision-makers in both educational policies and school leaders, we intend to evaluate this program by verifying if its objectives were met and by listening to the perception of the participants two to three years after attending. We aim to explore the results of the Ubuntu Leadership Academy project in the development of the skills of the students who attended it. To do this, we used the results of the questionnaires that the ALU participants filled out at the end of the program, conducted an exploratory interview with the Director-General of Education, applied a questionnaire to the animators, and heard from parents and students in a focus group. The results obtained, analysed according to the defined evaluation matrix, seem to indicate that the objectives were achieved, with changes reported in the majority of students and an expectation of continuity of the ALU.
