Este estudo analisa as experiências linguísticas de lusodescendentes em três contextos migratórios distintos — Paris, Londres e Nova Jérsia — com foco na relação com o português enquanto Língua de Herança. A investigação adota uma abordagem qualitativa, baseada em entrevistas semiestruturadas realizadas com nove participantes adultos que cresceram em ambientes plurilingues marcados pela presença do português e da língua dominante do país de acolhimento.
A análise dos testemunhos recolhidos permitiu reconhecer práticas familiares, percursos afetivos, representações sociais e dinâmicas comunitárias que influenciam a forma como a língua portuguesa é vivida e percebida.
Os resultados revelam uma diversidade de trajetórias, com graus variados de contacto e envolvimento com a língua, moldados por fatores como a consistência do uso familiar, a visibilidade da comunidade portuguesa local, as políticas linguísticas e as ideologias em torno do bilinguismo.
Ao dar voz aos próprios falantes, este trabalho propõe uma leitura crítica e contextualizada da experiência linguística de lusodescendentes, destacando a importância de reconhecer a pluralidade de vivências e a legitimidade de diferentes percursos linguísticos em contextos migratórios.
This study explores the linguistic experiences of Portuguese descendants in three different migrant contexts — Paris, London and New Jersey — with a focus on their relationship with Portuguese as a Heritage Language. The research adopts a qualitative approach, based on semi-structured interviews conducted with nine adult participants who grew up in multilingual environments where Portuguese coexisted with the dominant language of the host country. The analysis of the interviews highlights how family practices, emotional ties, social representations, and community dynamics shape the way Portuguese is experienced and perceived. The findings reveal a wide range of trajectories, reflecting different levels of exposure and engagement with the language, influenced by factors such as family language choices, the visibility of the local Portuguese community, language policies, and prevailing ideologies around bilingualism. By centring the voices of the speakers, this study offers a critical and situated perspective on the linguistic experiences of Portuguese heritage speakers, underlining the importance of recognising diverse pathways and the legitimacy of all linguistic repertoires in migratory contexts.
