Abstract(s)
Conceptualized in 1987 and initially disseminated in institutional and academic circles, sustainable development is a topic that has been gaining ground in the public and political sphere. Associated with environmental preservation, social justice and economic development, the UN, various international and political bodies at a regional, national and local scale have considered it one of the most significant challenges for humanity. The written press, as a forum that reflects different voices and narratives, can be decisive in influencing and conditioning discourse and even future policies in the field of sustainable development, informing, inspiring and influencing positive changes in society. Aiming to categorize the type of articles in which SD is mentioned, characterize the tone, narrative and dominant voices of the articles and identify the moral claims that underlie the articles, this work seeks to assess the state of the debate on Sustainable Development in the years 2019 and 2020 in three of the main portuguese written press titles: Expresso, Jornal de Notícias and Público. The results showed a significant increase in articles in 2020, compared to 2019, the existence of a plurality of voices occupying the media space, the treatment of SD as something positive to be achieved and an expected prevalence of news articles. There were also some notable differences between the three newspapers that can be justified by the audience profiles they intend to reach.
