Esta dissertação de Mestrado pretendeu incorrer no domínio do género e desenvolvimento
em São Tomé e Príncipe.
Pretendeu-se com este estudo, analisar e compreender a evolução do Movimento de
Mulheres em São Tomé e Príncipe, nos períodos colonial e pós-colonial. Este último
compreendeu duas etapas: a primeira república, de 1975 a 1990, em que só existia uma
organização de mulheres e a segunda república, a partir de 1990, período a partir do qual
surgiram outras Associações e Organizações da Sociedade Civil.
O Governo de São Tomé e Príncipe adotou por Decreto, a partir de 2007, uma Estratégia
Nacional para a Igualdade e Equidade de Género. Este estudo pretendeu saber como encaram
as Associações de Mulheres e os dirigentes políticos e de Movimentos Sociais o modo como
as políticas e os programas tomam em conta esses engajamentos/ compromissos assumidos.
Procurou-se também saber como se posicionam mulheres e homens face à prática efetiva da
igualdade de género, tendo em conta a existência de leis favoráveis à mesma.
A abordagem metodológica englobou uma componente quantitativa e outra qualitativa. A
componente quantitativa, foi levada a cabo com aplicação de inquéritos por questionário a
uma amostra das Associações da Região do Príncipe. A componente qualitativa
compreendeu a aplicação de inquéritos por entrevista a cinco líderes de diferentes contextos
de intervenção política no país, sobre os assuntos em estudo. Os dados das entrevistas foram
tratados de acordo com a análise de conteúdo, tendo as categorias de análise emergido da
análise dos questionários e dos discursos dos participantes.
Este estudo exploratório revelou que a análise das políticas e dos mecanismos para a
igualdade bem como o enquadramento jurídico-legal e as conclusões obtidas no estudo
empírico, embora não possam ser generalizadas, permitiram encontrar uma luz para as
questões colocadas inicialmente sobre a perceção sobre os movimentos de mulheres e a
igualdade de género em São Tomé e Príncipe.
This Master’s Thesis intended to apply in the field of gender and development in Sao Tomé and Principe. This Study aimed to find out the vision of the Women Association, political leaders, and, Social Movement leaders, and, how policies and programs have not taken into consideration those agreed commitments. We also looked into the position of women and men about the effective practice of gender equality, given the existence of favorable laws. The methodological approach comprised both quantitative, and, qualitative component. The qualitative component was done by the application of surveys by questionnaire to a sample of Associations from the Region of Principe. The qualitative component has involved the application of surveys by interviewing 5 leaders on different context of political intervention in the country, on subjects under study. Interview data were treated according to the analysis of substance, and, categories of analysis have emerged from questionnaires analysis, and, participants speeches. This exploratory study revealed that the analyses of policies and mechanisms for equality and the legal and regulatory framework and findings from the empirical study, although cannot be generalized, allowed to find a light to the issues initially placed about women’s organizations and gender equality in S.Tomé and Principe.
