Abstract(s)
A aplicação destas técnicas revelou a
A practical application of Exploratory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis is applied to the answers of a survey of 3519 secondary school students who attended a summer science internships programme promoted by the Portuguese National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture – Ciência Viva, held between 2005 and 2010. It also covers fundamental concepts and estimation and validity techniques as well. It was found that these multivariate statistical techniques were appropriate to uncover the relevant factor structure (latent variables or constructs) within the context of an extremely diverse research setting, not only in terms of the internships’ characteristics but also in terms of the wide range of scientific subject and host institutions. The latent variables’ structure revealed by this analysis was confirmed by Confirmatory Factor Analysis and validated in other samples. The findings also provide recommendations for the revision of the survey’s questionnaire, in order to reach a larger set of subscales to assess the participant’s attitudes towards their experience in the internships, and suggest a five-point Likert’s scale.
