Abstract(s)
Is the Myth of D. Juan still alive or, on the contrary, has it become extinct, becoming a legend, related to donjuanism? This was the main issue that has motivated the author of this work. Basing in mind a very considerable number of pieces of work and opinions regarding this myth, it was intended, at a first moment, to define a myth notion that allowed explaining its existence in previous historical societies and current moments. Starting mainly from the value of the language in the formation of the myth, suggested by Roland Barthes in Mythologies and by Luis Cencillo in Mito, Semántica e realidad, in the language of seduction a field of analysis was meant to be found, open to the use of a pragmatic literary study, which allowed the understanding of the Myth of Don Juan. Based particularly on the readings of Ruth Amossy concerning the stereotype, the author extended this study to the donjuan literary production in Portuguese Literature, particularly to the most representative in terms of literary and current recognition, namely: A Morte de D. João, by Guerra Junqueiro; D. João e a Máscara, by António Patrício; D. João e Julieta, by Natália Correia; D. João no Jardim das Delícias, by Norberto Ávila and O Dissoluto Absolvido, by José Saramago. The author of this work concluded that the Myth of Don Juan, being a myth of the lexicon, is not identifiable with a literary myth. It was not literature that created the myth of D. Juan, but the Myth of D. Juan that took hold of itself in literature, namely on drama, as the ideal area for its mythical fulfilment as far as the word is concerned
