Abstract(s)
This paper focuses on a corpus of 520 master's theses presented to Portuguese public universities, distinguishing the disciplinary areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Social and Human Sciences and Humanities (SHSH). The main goal was to analyse the language of communication, macrotextual structures, texts’ length and the use of resources such as figures and tables. Within the area of Text and Discourse Linguistics, several theoretical proposals by Bronckart (1997), Adam (2008), Maingueneau (2014) and Swales (2004) were adopted. The results indicate different trends in the two main areas: use of Portuguese, adoption of structuring plans by topics and longer texts in SHSH, contrasting with the dominant use of English, the adoption of a mixed structuring plan and less extensive texts in STEM.
