Abstract(s)
Volunteers have always been present within societies, although exhibiting different expressions, commonly of charity nature, isolated, sporadic and often motivated by familiar, friendship or neighborhood motives. While throughout several years their effort was perceived as a way to fill insufficiencies, nowadays they possess a specific space, complementary of professionals and institutions work. Studies on Gender have been focusing the inequalities related with social roles, which seem to be vibrant in volunteer work domain and, particularly, in specific contexts, such as hospitals. This study was developed in Liga dos Amigos do Hospital de Portalegre (LAHP), and by means of a qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews, we aimed to identify the traits that characterize volunteers working in this institution, in order to build a profile of motivations related with gender, as well as to know their perceptions about volunteer work. Our results suggest a prevalence of women within this context of volunteer work, which is explained, based on their perceptions, by characters related with de social construction of gender. This study presents a few limitations, such as the non-inclusion on younger volunteers and men in our sample.
