Abstract(s)
This dissertation focuses on the analysis of Chiquinho, by Baltasar Lopes, considering its narrative structure in light of the mental and narrative structure known as the “Hero’s Journey”, as outlined by Joseph Campbell, while also exploring its framework through the lens of Bibliotherapy. It seeks to understand how the protagonist’s journey is marked by themes such as belonging, migration, and overcoming adversity and reflects an archetypal narrative pattern, offering the reader an experience of identification, reflection, and personal growth. In addition to the theoretical approach, a mixed methodology was employed, including a survey conducted with readers who have engaged with the work, aiming to gather insights into the emotional and symbolic impact of the narrative. This emphasizes the legacy of Chiquinho and the fact that the novel continues to be valued as a reading tool that transcends its historical and cultural context, remaining relevant as a literary work that fosters inner dialogue and the re-signification of life experiences. This study also aims to highlight that both Campbell’s theory and reading practices with therapeutic purposes remain open fields for future research and new applications in various educational and social contexts.
