Abstract(s)
A BE desenvolve
School has as its mission to contribute to the development of learning, helping each pupil to build up his/her own knowledge, promoting the development of skills to overpass new challenges, making pupils active, self-conscious and critical citizens. These ideas can also be found in IFLA/UNESCO School Library Manifesto, when it refers that the School Library has as goal âto create and strengthen childrenâs reading habits since their early childhoodâ (2000, p.2) and adds that it is also its role âto promote Reading, as well as its resources and services among the educational/ school community and outside itâ (idem). The importance of the School Library and of its services constitutes a demand that canât be replaced at school and in the contemporary society, based on information and knowledge. The School Library develops the skills of its users, promoting lifelong learning, increasing and varying pupils learning environments (either they are digital or not) considering its diverse and complementary functions: informative, educational, cultural and entertaining. Taking into account these framework, this study presents a case study based on the work developed by the School Library in terms of Reading skills. Thus, we intended to analyse the contribution of reading and book promoting activities carried out by the School Library and their influence on the development of pupilsâ reading skills, how they react and understand these activities and, finally, to examine how these activities are articulated with other curricular activities developed in the classroom.
