Abstract(s)
Professional education, which appeared in 1989 in professional schools, was attended by about 30 thousand students in the beginning of the millennium and assumes, presently, an increasingly important role in the formation and education of young people that, when arriving to the 10th year, choose this mode of education. The growth of this formation has been constant and accentuated since 2005, when this offer was extended to public secondary schools. Nowadays there are about 118,000 young people attending this mode of education, this means, a number four times higher than in the beginning of the century. In spite of the growth and recognition, this mode of formation is still socially stigmatized and associated with school failure. Thus, we give voice and hear the opinion of students that are attending a professional program of education to confirm or disprove the mentioned images associated with professional education programmes. As far as the methodology is concerned, we chose a case study conducted in a professional school located in the Lisbon area. After obtaining the due authorizations, we submitted an inquiry by questionnaire to finalist students of four professional courses, which have attended the course for about three years, have done several trainings and are preparing their professional future. After this, we made a descriptive analyses based on the collected data. In this study, we concluded that the socio-educational profile of these students confirms the results of similar investigations. The majority has known school failure and chose professional education because they believe that this formation prepares them correctly to enter in the world of labour. As far as the course is concerned, the students value all aspects related with the practical components of their course and, when they finish their course, they intend to find a job within their area of formation. Even though, assuming reconciliation with school, one third of the young people plans to continue to study in higher education.
