Abstract(s)
In the last two decades, the intensification of economic and diplomatic relations of the People's Republic of China (PRC) with Portuguese-speaking countries has contributed decisively to the expansion of teaching of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PLE) in Chinese universities. However, this rapid growth has occurred at the expense of the quality of Portuguese courses and departments, which face a shortage of qualified teachers and materials adequate to the growing number of Chinese learners. Accordingly, we hold that establishing platforms for distance learning of PLE in China may contribute to overcome these gaps, in a spirit of close collaboration between Portuguese and Chinese universities. In order to verify the viability of such projects, in the first chapter we take into consideration the academic literature on (i) the challenges posed by the characterization of the often stereotyped "Chinese learner"; (ii) the teaching of the Portuguese language in the PRC since the mid-twentieth century, in the context of foreign language teaching in the country since the fall of imperial China; (iii) the constraints of Internet access and usage in China and the status of distance education in this country. Afterwards, we present the results of a survey of 87 Chinese university students, in which we sought to get to know their Internet usage and Portuguese learning habits, both in terms of personal study and in the classroom. We attempted to understand, mainly, what role the Internet plays in their Portuguese learning, as well as is their perception of distance learning and their experience with this mean. Finally, given the carried out research and collected data, we conclude that PFL distance education solutions have the potential to be successful in China if they are carefully aligned with presence programs, complementing the training of learners and at the same time contributing for the development of undergraduate and Portuguese departments.
