Abstract(s)
In everyday life, speakers put into practice linguistic and discursive mechanisms that contribute to collaborative work, i.e. the co-construction of meaning and conversational involvement. Interactants activate a system of discursive practices, social conventions and rules of discursive procedure that organize the thematic flow of verbal interactions. In this paper, we will focus on humorous sequences that regularly occur in interactive oral discourse in Portuguese. It will be shown that humor is a strategy for mitigating conflict that interlocutors use to maintain and re-establish the interactional order of discursive exchanges. It will be verified that the functioning of indirect mechanisms of meaning, characteristic of humorous discourse, allows the interactants to distance themselves from what is being said by reorienting the discursive paths.
